WHY JOIN FPA?

If you’re a physician (or med student) who’s passionate about flying, you belong in the Flying Physicians Association (FPA)—a nationwide community of doctors who share your love for medicine and aviation.

Whether you’re in the air every weekend or haven’t flown in years, once a pilot, always a pilot. At FPA, we connect across generations and specialties to share stories, sharpen our medical knowledge, and explore new places—from tucked-away airstrips to vibrant cities—often via “the road less traveled.”

FPA is:

  • Family-friendly: Spouses and kids are part of the fun
  • Educational: CME opportunities with fresh, practical topics
  • Adventurous: Fly-ins to unique destinations each year
  • Inclusive: You don’t need to own a plane—or even be a current pilot—to join
  • Supportive: Discounts for students, residents, fellows, military, and retirees

We host a national summer meeting and a regional fall gathering, both packed with flying, learning, and connection. First-time members get a big discount on their first meeting!

Ready to join (or rejoin) the only community built for physician-pilots like you?

Join here or email Carrie at carrie@fpadrs.org with questions.

Let’s fly farther—together. Blue skies!

A Member's Take

A friend introduced me to the Flying Physicians Association — Ted Stransky, a fellow Cirrus pilot, COPA member, and physician. I didn't know a soul beyond Ted or quite what to expect, but I came away having learned a surprising amount about medicine well outside my own field — which is saying something for a pediatric neurosurgeon.

What makes FPA different is the mix: medicine, aviation, and genuinely fun destinations — not your typical conference vibe. The formal sessions are usually half-days, so there's real time left for touring and local experiences. Over the years I've picked up things far from my specialty — ophthalmology ('so that's how they do a cataract operation'), urology, OB/GYN, trauma and ICU care — plus aerospace medicine and insights from members who work with the FAA. I first heard about GLP-1 medications at an FPA meeting years before they were everywhere. There are talks on aviation safety from a medical point of view, the development of safety standards, even space-related medicine. CME is offered for the medical talks for those who need it.

Not everything is medicine. We draw excellent local speakers and nationally known guests — Bruce Landsberg and Michael Busch attend regularly and share their safety and mechanical insights. The members fly all kinds of airplanes and bring a wonderfully broad perspective on aviation.

The locations are chosen with families in mind, too — recent meetings have taken us to places like Rapid City, with trips to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Honestly, it's a great excuse for a flying trip: CME, aviation, and fun for you and the family, if you bring them.

You don't have to be a physician to join us — our meetings are open to all. And first-time attendees get 50% off registration, so it's an easy, low-risk way to see what we're about. Come fly with us."

The Flying Physicians Association (FPA) is the world’s leading community of physician-pilots—a unique network where medicine meets aviation. Our members connect through educational, charitable, and recreational experiences that celebrate both professions.

If you’re a practicing or retired physician (MD or DO), or a medical student who flies—or has ever flown—you’ll find your people here as an Active Member. Not a pilot yet? Physicians with a passion for aviation are warmly welcomed as Associate Members.
